The equipment is free-standing and comprises two stainless steel testpipesconnectedtoaconstantheadtankwiththenecessaryconnections toanF1-10HydraulicsBench.

Pipesurgedemonstrationsareconductedusingthefirsttestpipe,which incorporates a transparent surge shaft with scale and a lever operated valveatthedischargeend.Anadditionalvalvedownstreamenablesthe flowthroughthetestpipetobevariedbeforeclosingtheleveroperated valve.Anelectronicpressuresensorlocatedatthebaseofthesurgeshaft enablesthelow-speedtransientsinwaterleveltobemeasured.

Water hammer demonstrations are conducted using the second test pipe, which incorporates a fast-acting valve at the discharge end. An additionalvalvedownstreamenablestheflowthroughthetestpipeto bevariedbeforeclosingthefast-actingvalve.

Theuniquefast-actingvalve,specificallydesignedbyArmfield,enables waterhammertobegeneratedinarelativelyshortlengthofstraight

pipe because of the extremely short closure time achieved using atrigger actuator.

Tappingsincorporatingelectronicpressuresensorsarelocatedinthetest pipeadjacenttothefast-actingvalveandhalfwayalongthetestpipe.

These sensors measure the high-speed pressure transients inside the pipeasthewaterhammertravelsbackwardandforwardalongthetest pipe.Thetimedelaybetweenthesensorscanbeusedtodeterminethe speedofsoundthroughthewaterthatisattenuatedbytheelasticityof themetalpipewall.

Allthreepressuresensorsareconnectedtoaconditioningunit withUSBconnectionfordirectconnectiontoaPC(not supplied by Armfield).

ThetransientpressurewavescanbeanalysedonthePC(notsupplied) usingthesoftwaresupplied.Thepressuresensorsarepoweredfromthe USBportonthePCsonoadditionalpowersupplyisnecessary.
